Our types of haynets:

standard
hand-made
high-capacity

Does this problem sound familiar to your?

Your horse eats the loose hay much to hasty and / or stamps on it in the box or paddock. This can be abolished by using a haynet.

With the usual haynets we have to face the problem that due to the big meshes, there is the danger for he horse to get stuck in the meshes and get injured. As a consequence you could hang the haynet high up in a tree, but this means that the horse is no longer able to feed in a natural way (with its nose close to the ground).

We offer the ideal solution:

 fine meshed haynets, tailor made

Depending on your horse or the amount of horses you own, you will have different demands on a haynet. Therefore we offer you three different types:

Following please find some information which shall help you to find the right haynet matching your individual demands.

Mesh sizes:

Dependent of the size of the hoof and the size of the mouth of your horse. A warmblood or a large pony needs a net with the size of 4,5 x 4,5 cm up to 6 x 6 cm. With a smaller mesh, horses will have difficulties picking the hay through the meshes.

For smaller breeds (e.g. Shetland ponies) or foals it is advisable to use smaller meshes, e.g. 4 x 4 cm. Should you need smaller meshes we recommend our hand made hay net. It is made out of bale yarn (polypropylen) and the production of the more that 650 knots takes plenty of hours.

Duration of feeding:

This is strongly dependent on the horse, the way it feeds and the offered amount of hay. For example: Some horses feed as long a all forage is gone. The net is therefore emptied much quicker like horses which take breaks, drink some water or stroll around for a while.

We can´t tell how long YOUR horse will need to feed from the net. But it is proved that horses have a slower consumption feeding from a net than feeding loose hay.

Safety:

The possible case of an accident with unshod horses is, due to our experience, towards zero. Given the case that the meshes shows the appropriate size and the net is hung up/ fixed appropriate.

We don´t have any experience with shoed horses and therefore can´t give any recommendation.

We have successfully tested fine meshed haynets with a number of unshod horses in various situations. The advantages are very obvious:

  • Increased feeding time as the horses have to pull the hay through the small mesh. The horses therefore spend much more time feeding which corresponds to the nature of horses. In the wild it spends 2/3 of the day looking for nourishment and feeding.
  • Smaller loss of hay as the horses don´t stamp it.
  • Riskless fixing of the net close to the ground allows the horse to feed in a natural way. And hung up in a clever way (e.g. in a tree), several horses can feed at the save time. Even horses lower in hierachy do have a chance to pick their share.
  • Easy way to wet the hay, as those mobile nets can be easily dipped in a tub of water.
  • If necessary the ‚mobile net’ offers a comfortable way to precisely weight the amount of hay offered.

Tips from the expert:

  • If possible hang up the net at a place far away from the watering place. This keeps your horse moving as it meanders from food to water. This is no mean trick played on your horse but it fulfils 3 of the very own basic needs at one time:

permanent eating and moving and fresh air!

  • Give your horse enough time to get used to the hay net. Some horses need a little bit time to develop a "eating method". During this time you should feed your horse only with the haynet. Your horse will eat through the net rather than starving!

Information on the used materials:

Nets have a long lifespan provided that before purchase, it is considered that raw material, way of production, breaking load of the mesh and enforced rims are adequate to yours demands.

Our nets are made of the following materials: polyethylene, polypropylene and polyamide (nylon/perlon). Following please find the most important properties of these materials which of course reflects in the price:

POLYETHYLENE (pony- high capacity - haynets 4,5 x 4,5 cm meshes) has a low weight. It is lighter than water and does not absorb any humidity. Therefore it remains is lightweight even when wet, does not shrink and keeps its strengh. Polyethylene has a very good resistance to abrasion and shows a high resistance to UV-light. Its chemical resistance against petrol, lubricants, lye and acids is excellent. Polythylene does not disintegrate.

POLYPROPYLENE (high capacity haynets knotted and without knots) has a very high UV-resistance, does not rot and is robust against lyes, acids, benzine and lubricating oils. Its bending strength and scrub resistance are satisfying. Polyporpylene has a poor water absorbation.

POLYAMIDE (NYLON) (Basic haynets) is a continuous filament featuring the highest breaking strength and shows excellent resistance to abrasion. It absorbs water up to 7%. Tinted in a dark colour (e.g. green or black) it has a good UV resistance. Its prominent property is an excellent shock resistance not showing remaining deformation in its shape. A durable material when used indoor.

Following please find a comparison showing the maximum tensile load (Newton), done by the Technical Observation Institute.

·        4,0 mm Polypropylen knotted =  2279 Newton (approx. 232 kg)

·        4,0 mm Polypropylen without knots = 1550 Newton ((approx. 158 kg)

·        5,0 mm Polypropylen without knots = 2105 Newton ((approx. 215 kg)

·        3,0 mm Polyethylen knotted = 934 Newton (approx. 100 kg),

Remark: Each net on earth can be bitten into peaces by a horse if the horse want´s to! You should take the character of your horse into account as well as its way of feeding before choosing a net. A patient and ‚gentle’ horse needs less requirements to breaking strengh of the haynet than an impatient and ‚rough’ horse. The breed or size is not too important.

The market offers nets without knots and knotted nets, which are eather produced from twisted netyarn or knotted netyarn.

NETS WITHOUT KNOTS show a soft grip, are voluminous, its yarn diameter appears bigger than knotted nets. But the special structure of the yarns only allow a lower load. Repairs can only be done with special machines if a good optical result is needed.

KNOTTED NETS are made of fixed knots material and therefore keep their shape. In a relaxed state they detract in a diagonal way. Due to this production they are suitable to resist the highest loads and assure a long lifespan. Knotted nets can be repaired
